Bharathanatyam can be interpreted as BHA – Bhava (expression) RA – Raga (musical mode) and TA-Talam (Rhythm) originating from the Hindu temples of South India. It strictly complies to the rules in the Natya Shastra and attributes to sage Bharata Muni.

Embellished with intricate hand gestures and elaborate facial expressions, it is the worlds most complete manual for all aspects of performance.

Bharatanatyam, one of the oldest and most revered classical dance forms of India, is not merely a performance art but a profound expression of culture, spirituality, and tradition. Originating in the temples of Tamil Nadu, Bharatanatyam has evolved over centuries, blending elements of dance, music, poetry, and drama to create a captivating narrative that reflects the essence of Indian ethos.

The roots of Bharatanatyam can be traced back to the ancient temple rituals of South India, particularly in the devadasi tradition, where women dedicated their lives to serving the deity through dance and music. Initially known as Sadir Attam or Dasi Attam, Bharatanatyam underwent transformations over the centuries, influenced by various socio-cultural factors including invasions, colonialism, and religious reforms.

During the British colonial rule, Bharatanatyam faced suppression and stigmatization due to its association with the devadasi system, which was perceived as immoral by the colonial authorities. However, the efforts of visionary reformers like Rukmini Devi Arundale in the early 20th century played a pivotal role in reviving and reforming Bharatanatyam. Arundale, through her institution Kalakshetra, stripped away the association with the devadasi system and elevated Bharatanatyam to a respectable art form, thereby ensuring its survival and resurgence.

Bharatanatyam is characterized by its precise footwork, intricate hand gestures (mudras), graceful body movements, and expressive facial expressions. The dance repertoire consists of a structured sequence of adavus (basic steps), which are meticulously coordinated with the rhythm of the accompanying music. Each movement in Bharatanatyam is imbued with symbolic significance, conveying narratives from Hindu mythology, epics, and scriptures.

The dance is typically performed in three main elements: Nritta (pure dance), Nritya (expressive dance), and Natya (dramatic dance). Nritta focuses on rhythmic patterns and abstract movements, showcasing the dancer's technical prowess. Nritya involves emotive storytelling through expressions and gestures, evoking a range of emotions in the audience. Natya combines dance with narrative elements, where the dancer portrays characters from mythology or literature, bringing stories to life on stage.

In the contemporary era, Bharatanatyam continues to thrive as a vibrant and dynamic art form, transcending geographical boundaries and cultural barriers. Renowned dancers and choreographers have innovated upon traditional repertoire, incorporating modern themes, music, and dance techniques while staying true to the essence of the classical form.

Bharatanatyam has also found resonance in the global arena, captivating audiences worldwide with its aesthetic beauty and profound storytelling. International festivals, workshops, and collaborations have facilitated cross-cultural exchanges, enriching the dance form and fostering greater appreciation and understanding of Indian culture.

Furthermore, Bharatanatyam has empowered countless women to reclaim their identity and assert their artistic expression in a patriarchal society. Through their performances, female dancers challenge stereotypes and assert their agency, inspiring future generations to embrace their heritage with pride and confidence.
